At Desert Dove Christian Church, we desire to be a covenant community by nurturing a relationship with God and neighbor. We celebrate being a partnership community by serving together as laity and clergy believing that ministry belongs to all people of God.
Families and Kids
At Desert Dove kids are a very important part in the life of the church. During worship, children participate in a short message that is specially prepared for them. After the children's message, kids may go to church school for fun activities and enrichment programs for grade schoolers. They return to the sanctuary to share in communion with the parents and the congregation.
We work to make a difference in our neighborhood and the wider community. A part of Desert Dove's mission statement includes providing outreach programs that meet community needs. Some time ago, we reached out to a local public grammar school, Grijalva Elementary, and asked how we could assist them. We quickly discovered a most pressing need for the school which is readily assessable food to the children and their families. There was lots of excitement about partnering with Desert Dove to set up a school pantry. This Food Pantry Program is a joint effort including Desert Dove, the Tucson Community Food Bank, and Grijalva Elementary.
The pantry opened on September 22, 2016, with Desert Dove volunteers providing food shopping and managing food distribution. We are open for shopping one day a month. At our first day of food distribution, we served 10 families which included 36 children plus extended family for a total of 60 persons. We are currently serving about 90 to 100 families each month. Other community and faith partners have joined us in this vital work helping us keep up with the community needs, Tucson International Academy and Cactus Community Church.
We offer a variety of educational and fellowship opportunities for adults. Our church is a great place to grow spiritually and also to make new friends.
Through our regional ministries, there are various events throughout the year for the children and youth of Disciples congregations in Arizona, such as summer camps and regional youth gatherings.
